Budleigh GP aids cricket team mate after heart attack
July 2011 – Medical equipment testing and calibration expert, JPen Medical , has issued a warning to businesses and sports clubs in the wake of the recent incident concerning a cricketer who survived a heart attack after a Doctor and team-mate was able to treat him with a defibrillator he had in the boot of his car.
JPen Medical urges duty holder and businesses to ensure medical equipment is readily available in precaution of such incidents occurring.
It is estimated that at least 80% of all Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCA) occur outside the hospital environment, and of those the survival rate is currently less than 5% due to the lack of rapid access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). According to statistics from the British Heart Foundation there are 124,000 heart attacks in the UK every year.
JPen Medical General Manager, Peter Averill states “ In this case the cricketer was very fortunate that he was playing with friends who were there and able to treat him, if that wasn’t the case then the equipment which one of the doctors had in his car might not have been available therefore potentially causing the worst case scenario.
All facilities such as sports centres should have a defibrillator available in case of an emergency, which has been tested and calibrated and is ready for use. Many do not and fatalities occur, either due to the lack of equipment, or equipment failures.
When tragedies and accidents occur, perhaps the single most important factor is that we learn from them and take active measures to avoid such disasters happening again.”
